Five things that caught my eye this weekend

Starting this week, there will be a story of the five biggest things that caught my eye over the weekend.

From true freshmen to high school kickers, here's what I saw this weekend. Enjoy.

Clemson's stacked freshman class

While Clemson has struggled mightily to begin the year, the Tigers may have found their next core of star players.

Peter Woods and T.J. Parker have shined in the trenches, with both players making a case to earn a starting gig. Meanwhile, linebacker Khalil Barnes has made the most of his limited playing time. He is the only player on the Clemson roster with two passes defended, an interception and a forced fumble.

Offensively, local product Tyler Brown has emerged as the next great at the receiver position. He is third on the team in receiving yard and one of two Tigers with two touchdown receptions, but following the loss of starter Cole Turner, the program should turn to Brown to pick up the slack.

Aleyna Quinn field goal

Aleyna Quinn, a three-sport star at Castle (IN), showcased her athletic prowess on the gridiron over the weekend.

Just days after netting her 100th goal on the pitch, Quinn drained her first field goal attempt as a member of the Knights' football team. The 42-yard kick is the fourth-longest field goal ever made by a female at the high school level.

Oklahoma's next great duo?

In recent years, the Sooners have seen their fair share of unstoppable offensive duos. Well, the next may come from their 2023 recruiting class.

Five-star freshman quarterback Jackson Arnold has shown superstar talent in his limited snaps, completing 86% of his passes for 169 yards and three total touchdowns. Likewise, redshirt freshman receiver Nic Anderson stole the show over the weekend.

The former three-star recruit became the first freshman in Oklahoma history to record three touchdown receptions in a single game, including an absolute dot from the aforementioned Arnold.

Dante Moore is the future of the Bruins

If it wasn't already abundantly clear, former five-star signal caller Dante Moore has lived up to the hype through three games.

In his three starts, Moore has racked uo 615 yards and seven touchdowns to just one interception while completing over 62% of his pass attempts. The Bruins currently sit at 3-0, but face three consecutive ranked opponents, which should give us a true measuring stick on where the program currently stands.

High school win streaks survive

The longest active win streak in high school football belongs to Andale (KS), who have won 55 consecutive games. Things have come easy for the Indians, who have outscored their opponents by a combined 2,511 points during the streak.

However, the second longest win streak in America belongs to John Milledge Academy (GA), who has remained unbeaten in their last 52 contests. However, led by running back Jordan Tripplet, the Frederica Academy Knights gave the Trojans perhaps the biggest scare they have encountered in the last four seasons.

Following a season-high in punts, a lost interception and a plethora of penalties, the Trojans escaped with a 17-7 win. It is one of just a handful of close calls that the program has endured in recent years. Things should ease up a bit for the Trojans however, as just two of the next six teams on their schedule have a record better than .500.
