The same day that Jakyri Jones officially entered his name into the transfer portal, Georgia Southern reached out to set up a visit. And on Monday, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound defensive back made his way to Statesboro.

Three days after he first stepped foot in Statesboro, Jones officially announced his intentions to join the Eagles. He arrives with up to two years of eligibility remaining and is looking to make an immediate impact on a brand new Georgia Southern defense.

“I felt very comfortable and welcomed by everyone on staff,” Jones said of his two-day visit in Statesboro. “I was treated very kindly and politely. The scenery felt like home. I know that Georgia Southern is my new home and I am proud to say that.”

After touring campus and the football program’s facilities, Jones was able to sit down with a handful of Georgia Southern coaches, including new defensive coordinator Mike Mutz. The group not only talked ball, but also broke down hours of Jones’ film from his time with the Lions.

“I talked with Coach (Darius) Safford, (Dillon) Springer and (Mike) Mutz — basically the whole defensive stadf — and Coach (Clay) Helton,” Jones said. “I will be at the safety position laying hits and being a ballhawk in different positions and situations.”

Alongside his tour and visits with a number of coaches, Jones was treated to three meals with his future teammates. He noted that the immediate chemistry felt amongst the group served as another driving force behind his commitment.

Win asked what his message to Eagle Nation was, Jones had one simple goal: “Let’s work and win this Sun Belt Conference Championship!”
