Eagles land handful of commits during busy week

After a season that saw the Georgia Southern baseball program fall just short of a Sun Belt Championship, the Eagles’ coaching staff has hit the recruiting trail hard during the offseason.

Josh Owens — a two-way player out of Tennessee — kicked off an electric week for the Eagles’ future with his commitment. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior projects best as a middle infielder, but also possesses a fastball that can touch the low 90s.

In-state outfielder Mason Gazaway was the next recruit to announce his pledge to Georgia Southern. He boasts a smooth swing, but generates high-level power to all fields. While he spent time on the mound and in the infield, Gazaway should continue to project as an outfielder at the college level.

Carter Blankinship was the next name to come off the board and announce his commitment to the Eagles. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound utility player projects as an outfielder, but his consistency at the plate is what pops off the page when looking at the Palmetto State product.

Left-handed pitcher Carson Ritola — out of Saint Simons — verbally committed to the Eagles on Wednesday. While his fastball tops out around 90 miles per hour, he possesses a pair of wicked off speed pitches that can slow all the way down to 70.

Less than a month after decommitting from Georgia State, Wilcox County pitcher Jake Howell announced his commitment to the Eagles this week. Similarly to Ritola, his fastball tops out around the 90 miles per hour range, but his off speed pitches leave batters looking silly.

After their busy week, the Eagles now hold commitments from 13 different athletes. Nine of those 13 student-athletes are from the Peach State, while the other four athletes hail from four of the states that neighbor Georgia.
