As the countdown begins toward the 2024 football season, we will be taking a look at some of the new faces in the program. To kick off the series we’ll turn our attention to sixth-year tight end and Auburn transfer Tyler Fromm.
Fromm played tight end at Warner Robins High School where the four-star prospect logged 654 receiving yards in 20 games played. As the 8th best tight end in the country, Fromm was recruited by numerous Power 4 schools, including Florida, LSU, UNC, Ole Miss and most interestingly by a Clay Helton-led USC. When asked about what led him to GS, his first response was “good coaches over here that I had previous relationships with”. That connection stayed with him even after spending four years at Auburn.
At Auburn, it seems Fromm transitioned from catching passes to assisting in blocking. After battling injuries during his first year on the plains, Fromm logged just one appearance as a redshirt freshman before hauling in just 14 receptions for 165 yards and a touchdown over the next three seasons.
Fromm was deployed in both blocking and passing roles during the Eagles’ spring game, but established himself most as a powerful force in the trenches. I got to meet with him briefly after the game and he is a towering figure. He’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 230-pounds, but those numbers appear conservative from a visual standpoint. It goes without saying that playing in an SEC environment for four years has bulked him up and loaded him with plenty of high quality experience.
All that said, don’t expect to hear his name a whole lot. Blocking is an unglamorous role within the sport, but without it the offense can’t succeed. He’s poised to be a cornerstone of the offense, and likely NFL bound talent, who can catch the ball when called upon. More often than not, however, you'll see number seven clearing a path for our ball carriers by bowling over the defenders.
