After a promising rollercoaster first season under first-time head coach Charlie Henry, the Georgia Southern basketball program has hit the recruiting trail hard this summer.

Three-star Overtime Elite (GA) shooting guard Marcus Gillespie earned an offer from the Eagles in July amidst a dominant streak on the Under Armour UAA circuit.

“The whole coaching staff was watching film and said I bring what they need in a guard,” Gillespie said. “(Their message) has really been about my combo guard ability, being able to score and pass.”

The Eagles joined seven other programs in their pursuit of the talented guard, with three other Sun Belt Conference foes and Georgia Tech having also extended an offer. However, the opportunity to play Division I basketball in his hone state is something the 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard cherishes.

“It means a lot to receive the opportunity to okay in my home state on a (Division) I level,” Gillespie said.

Thing are still in their early stages between Gillespie and the Eagles, but he noted that Georgia Southern is squarely within his top-5 or top-10 schools at the moment. While he does not have a visit to Statesboro scheduled at the time of writing, he will travel to Queens University and the University of Georgia in the coming weeks.
