Amidst the plethora student athletes to receive a scholarship offers from the Georgia Southern football staff in the month of January was Blessed Trinity (GA) cornerback TJ Umenyiora, the son of former All-Pro defensive end Osi Umenyiora.
The Eagles were the first FBS school to extend an offer to Omenyiora, but nearly two dozen more programs have joined in the pursuit of the talented defensive back since then.
“It is amazing as I spent hours grinding to perfect my craft,” Umenyiora said of his recent slew of offers. “The results are showing.”
Defensive backs coach Darius Safford has taken the lead on Umenyiora’s recruitment, with the pair talking on a fairly consistent basis. His relationship with Safford is perhaps the main reason the Eagles are so high on his list at the moment.
“Coach Safford checks in with me often,” Umenyiora said. “(He) tells me I would fit well in his system as a big corner.”
Umenyiora made the short trek to Statesboro for a Junior Day visit in late January before Safford made a visit to Roswell just two days later. It is clear the Eagles have prioritized the 6-foot-2, 185-pound defender, who is already high on the program.
“(Georgia) Southern is definitely up there,” Umenyiora said. “I loved the campus and the people there made me feel at home.”
