Despite a heartbreaking loss to the Boise State Broncos on Saturday, a number of Georgia Southern players put together noteworthy performances.
Perhaps the most surprising performance of the day came from J.C. French, who threw for 322 yards and three total touchdowns and led the Eagles with 39 yards on the ground. His 322 yards is currently good enough for No. 25 in the country, but the redshirt sophomore ranks within the top-20 of quarterbacks with just one game under their belt.
While French led a lackluster rushing attack for the Eagles on Saturday, it was senior running back Jalen White that accounted for three touchdowns on the ground. His trio of scores is the second highest total in all of FBS after week one, joining eight others behind only Ashton Jeanty’s six scores.
Another pleasant surprise was the performance of 2023 Freshman All-American DeAndre Buchannon, who accounted for 135 return yards, 44 receiving yards and another 11 yards on the ground. His 135 yards in the return game alone was the second most in the nation over the weekend, while his 192 all-purpose yards were good enough for No. 13 in the FBS.
And while it was a rough day on the field for Clay Helton’s team, there are a number of positive takeaways from Saturday’s performance. The Eagles’ offense converted on 63.2% of their third down plays, which currently sits as the 18th best rate in the country.
