The Georgia Southern football program continued to extend a slew of offers throughout the Peach State last over the last week or two, with Luella (GA) safety Markel Aguirre announcing an offer from the Eagles just over a week ago.
"It's so meaningful to see hard work turn into offers," Aguirre said. "I knew I had to work harder for this and show coaches that I'm a certified 'dawg.'"
Georgia Southern was late to the party when it comes to Aguirre's recruitment, but the in-state product has already formed a genuine connection with the program.
"The coaches there are like a family," Aguirre said. "They build trust with you and develop your skills."
When talking with the Georgia Southern coaching staff, it became apparent to Aguirre that the team valued his versatility above all. In addition to his 57 total tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions and pass deflection at his listed position as a safety, Aguirre added 722 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver, running back and kick returner.
"(They are) telling me that I can play nickel, safety and cornrer," Aguirre said. "I love that they can trust me to play all three."
Despite a number of high-level Power Four programs extending an offer to the 6-foot-1, 190-pound athlete, Aguirre still holds Georgia Southern in high regards. He plans on making his way to Statesboro later this spring for a junior day visit.
"(They're) in my top five for sure," Aguirre said. "But I know it's going to change when I visit the school more."
