The moment a high school athlete receives their first offer is one that many will cherish for the rest of their career.
Loyola Academy (IL) center Joe Herbert added his first offer in late March, when Division II Wayne State gave him an opportunity to extend his athletic career.
“I have always wanted to play collegiate football,” Herbert said. “Finally realizing that all of my hard work is paying off is an amazing feeling.”
A little over a month after receiving his first offer from the Warriors, the unranked center received a pair of Division I offers. Butler and San Diego — both programs at the FCS level — extended offers to the 6-foot-3, 270-pound lineman over a two-week span.
In addition to the schools that have already extended an offer, Hebert has heard from more than 10 other schools at the FCS level. He has also made visits Bucknell, Drake, Eastern Illinois, Fordham and North Dakota over the last few months.
Herbert will not forget who jumped in on his recruitment early, with the Bulldogs already receiving a visit from the Chicago native.
“I will definitely take into consideration the schools that have offered me early on,” Herbert said. “I visited Butler last month and I really liked the coaching staff and what they were all about. I am visiting there again next month and I am very excited. I also plan on visiting San Diego soon and meeting their staff and learning more about the program.”
Outside of a return trip to Butler and a visit to San Diego, Herbert has not filled his summer schedule just yet. However, a trip to Northwestern for camp will highlight what is sure to be an important summer in his recruitment.
