GHSA State Championship Preview: Class 5A

Writer's picture: DJ CaddenDJ Cadden

As of Monday, Prep Ballers has begun our in-person coverage of the 2023 GHSA State Football Championship.

The penultimate matchup of the week is a true heavyweight bout between the Coffee Trojans (14-0) and the nationally ranked Creekside Seminoles (13-1).

While the Trojans are undefeated up to this point, the only loss on the Seminoles' schedule came at the hands of the No. 3 team in the entire country. Otherwise, Creekside had cruised to 13 wins.

Both programs have made the trip to Atlanta once in the past, but Creekside is the only one with a state championship under their belt, which came in 2013.

As far as recruiting is concerned, it's a lopsided affair in the favor of the Seminoles, but don't count out the Trojans.

Below is a list of all players with college offers, along with a hyperlink to their recruiting profile if available.

Creekside

  • 2024 four-star interior offensive lineman Caleb Holmes (Pittsburgh commit)

  • 2024 three-star defensive lineman Michai Boireau (Florida commit)

  • 2025 linebacker Zarian Jones (one Division II offer)

  • 2026 athlete Anthony Hill (one NAIA offer)

Coffee

  • 2024 edge rusher Larenzo Harvey (teo Division I offers)

  • 2024 defensive end/tight end Elgie Paulk (one Division II offer)

  • 2024 wide receiver Patrick McCall (one Division III offer)

  • 2024 athlete Tyriq Edwards (one Division III and one NAIA offer)

Analysis and Pick

Again, this matchup looks to be a very even one on paper, but I give the Seminoles a major advantage on Wednesday.

The only loss on Creekside's schedule came on the road at the hands of the No. 3 high school football team in America. Otherwise, they have been nearly unstoppable, even taking down some out-of-state powerhouses.

While Coffee is certainly a state championship caliber program, their talent simply does not compare to what Creekside brings to the table. I believe this game is close for about a half before the Seminoles begin to impose their will and pull away to clinch their second state title.
