How Texas Tech is building a historic class

Texas Tech is on pace for what could end up being the best recruiting class in program history.

Only three recruiting classes in Texas Tech history have winded up as a top-30 class, which is where the 2024 recruiting class currently sits. However, with the program trending to land five-star wide receiver Micah Hudson, this year's class could reach uncharted territories.

"Coach (Joey) McGuire preaches culture and having a true relationship with the players outside of football," three-star wide receiver commit Tyson Turner said. "I liked that a lot about him because he doesn’t treat you as someone he can use to win, but he treats every single player like family."

Perhaps the most unique thing in regards to the Red Raiders' recruiting class is the fact that all 17 current members hail from the state of Texas, something that will define the class for years to come.

The reasoning is simple: Texas is arguably the most talent-filled state when it comes to high school football.

"If you would ask me why they choose from Texas, it’s simply because we have the best athletes," four-star edge rusher and Red Raider commit Cheta Ofili said. "There’s no point in going elsewhere."

McGuire, now preparing for his second season with the Red Raiders, is one of the most successful head coaches in the history of high school football in the state of Texas, so his fondness for the state's athletes is to be expected.

"I believe that Texas high school football is the best of the best," Turner said. "I think that by recruiting mostly Texas guys the staff knows the type of competitive environment they are coming from, so they can trust the recruits to be able to get on campus and immediately fight for a spot."

After an 8-5 record in capped off by a dominant bowl victory over an SEC foe in year one under McGuire, one strong recruiting class could put the Red Raiders in a spot to truly compete for Big 12 superiority going forward.
